Spooky Wines

Scorpio Season is fully upon us, Halloween approaches, and the fate of our democracy is right around the corner. We've put together a small, but meaningful, collection of our favorite wines that freak us out and get us in the mood for the spookiest season of the year.

Weingut Schmitt "Voodoo Doll" $43
2018
Rheinhessen, Germany
100% Riesling
Have you wronged someone this Scorpio Season? Get honest and get right by them by gifting them this delicious bottle of "Voodoo Doll" before they're inspired to make you in to one. This Riesling has seen about a month of skin contact and spent 12 months in neutral oak with no stirring of the lees. Palate of nutmeg, cinnamon, citrus zest and apricot. This wine is inpired by dry Tokaji wines. Pair with salmon and squash.

Adega Sernande "Vertixe" $35
2018
Ribeira Sacra, Spain
100% Mencia
Vertixe roughly translates to vertigo which can accurately describe the feeling one gets when drinking this wine, it is so disarming. This bottle comes from 100% wild Mencia sourced from old vines grown on the mineral rich soils of Ribeira Sacra. A portion of the stems are left on during fermentation which gives the wine a brambly, rustic flavor that allows the rambunctious nature of the fruit to remain. Flavors of raspberry, blackberry, cocoa and anise. Some time in used barrel softens this Mencia’s tannins. This bottle pairs so well with food. Red meats, rich cheeses, root vegetables, mushrooms and all kinds of spices.

Rubén Díaz Paso de Cebra Blanco y Paso de Cebra Garnacha $26 (each)

Díaz quotes Baudelaire: “Wine is like man: you never know to what extent it can be appreciated or despised…nor how many sublime acts or monstrous crimes it is capable of performing.” The Blanco, made from 100% Albillo, is a medium bodied textured white with flavors of green fruit, dill and fennel. It's sister, 100% Garnacha is a rich and surprising expression of the grape. Velvety with flavors of purple berries, earth and stone. A bit like being buried alive. Pair with a review of The Shining.

As always, thank you for reading and we hope to see you soon ;) xoxo BTB
