Winemaker Dato Kobidze’s family vineyards are tucked into the western Georgian region of Guria bordering the Black Sea. Dato focuses on rare, indigenous Gurian varietals, many of which were almost lost during Soviet occupation. This bottle of Aladasturi is comes from centenarian vines and is fermented in Qvevri. The flavors of this wine are unique and disarming: fresh red fruit gives a bright introduction to a structured, earthy mid-palate. The finish is dry and savory with light, chalky tannins. Pair with a heaping dish of eggplant parmesan.
